The Lakes is a mystery drama created and written by Jimmy McGovern for BBC1. The first series – comprised of four episodes – broadcast from 14 September to 5 October 1997. A second series of ten episodes ran from 10 January to 14 March 1999.Danny Kavanagh leaves Liverpool for the Lake District, finding work at a hotel and love with a local girl named Emma. Yet Danny remains an outsider in the close-knit community, and through the machinations of fate, he finds himself implicated in a tragedy. The secrets, lies, and crimes, of the seemingly tranquil community continue to be revealed.

After the mysterious disappearance of her father, a traumatized Michelle ran away, vowing never to return to Crowing Lakes. Years later, news arrives that the estranged mother of her ex-boyfriend (Chad) has suffered a similar fate. Michelle's friends convince her to return home to support Chad, and finally face the fears that have been haunting her for years. The group heads to Crowing Lakes for the weekend, unaware that the unexplained disappearance is not an isolated incident. A local DNR officer befriends the group, while desperately trying to solve the odd occurrences to prevent more locals from moving away in a struggle to keep the resort town afloat. All seems to be going better than expected, until things take a deadly turn and their friends begin to disappear, one by one. Their frantic search for a reasonable explanation brings them face-to-face with the horrifying secret that Crowing Lakes has kept for more than half a century.

We begin at the train station near Montana's Glacier National Park, where Blackfeet Indians meet the arriving tourists. Glacier Park, an off-screen narrator tells us, has the remnants of 60 glaciers, from three ice ages. We visit the lodge, built in Swiss style, where college students dressed in Swiss garb do the serving at the restaurant. We watch Indian dancing and a ceremony. After views of lakes, mountains, and trails in the park, it's north to Canada's Waterton Lakes, a vacation spot for Canadian and U.S. families.
